Mid-Day Madness

For some reason I can't seem to write in the middle of the day. It seems like I can sit and concentrate on my writing in the early morning, if I drag myself out of bed before I have to get the kidlets ready for school, or in the evening when hubby wants to cuddle, or talk or whatever. I get a burst of inspiration at night, a burst of writing energy and I feel great, staying up till the wee hours getting something done. But during the day, whether I am home alone or not, I just can't seem to keep my mind focused on my writing. It is really a pain, I want to set time aside during the day for writing, it would be convenient to do it when I am not having to cater to anyone else's needs. But for some reason I just can't seem to do it.

Perhaps I should start sleeping during the day, and stay up even later to get the writing done, LOL, yes my hubby would really like that (sarcasm). I am starting to wonder if I need to force my concentration better during the day, maybe that would work, but probably not. It seems to me that the more I try and force myself to write, the less I get done. It wouldn't seem so odd, i suppose if it wasn't a new sort of thing to happen. I don't think that I have been in this same rut, or maybe I was and just didn't notice it because I had less time during the day to write even if I wanted to. But now I am staying home, and I thought I would have so much opportunity to get stuff done I would be incredibly productive. Not so much.

Well one good thing that has come of this recent development is that my house is much cleaner! I am without else to do and so I clean, not fun, but rewarding.

What about you guys out there? When are you most productive? And do you like it, does it work for you or did you change to work for it?

Goodness, Courtney, you mirror my life? lol

I, too, thought when I quit my job last spring, I'd push more work out. Ha! Jokes on me.

Well, I can't say I've not been productive, but not as productive as I thought I'd be.

I think for me, I normally worked in the afternoons, so it's not my routine to write.

Here, nine months later, I do manage a little writing in the afternoon, it's because I take breaks. Some scheduled, some because my mind wanders.

I'm beginning to think I should take those hours and use them for a more active role in my writing business. If I can't write, work on promo opportunties, research, write up blogs.

After all, I'd been pulling my hair out over how to write and promo at the same time. There wasn't enough time during the day. Now, I have those hours I didn't have before. I should make them work for me.

Hi Courtney! Fascinating post!

I like to write in the morning if I can, when I'm fresh.

Hi Bekki - I know what you mean about promo. I keep thinking, I need to do more blog posts on my own blog and elsewhere. So far I haven't. I think it's because I love writing fiction and non-fiction I find really hard.

Hi Courtney, overall, writing at night has been the most productive for me.
Recently, my schedule has been so crazy, it's been hit and miss.
I have found it often depends on the type of writing I'm doing.
Unlike Lindsay, I have to gear up the ole brain before my serious writing begins, so I read blogs, and do promo stuff, etc.
Now that I'm editing and polishing Branded, it's a different type of creativity and I can work on it during the day.
However, I'm mostly a night owl... so that kinda says it all.
I didn't used to be. Perimenopause brought on that change. And it was either go with it, or get nothing done.

COURTNEY--I'm getting to know the other HEA bloggers--I know most, but have not met you. I'd like to know more, but at least I have a vision of you now. I'll look up your website--that'll help. Celia

Thanks for all the comments. I think writing when inspired, no matter what time it is, is the way to go.

I'm a morning person, so, if given a choice, I would write curing the day. Writing at night can be painful. After work, I'm dead tired, and artificial light hurts my eyes.
