An author and her pet...

Pets are good for you and that's official. Owning a pet one can stroke and pet can help to reduce stress and lower blood pressure. The unswerving support and adoration of a faithful dog or house rabbit can sweeten those rejections and make the lonley life of the writer less lonely. An author can take inspiration from the haughty self-contained grace and self-belief of a cat to keep going and keep faith in her work. A writer can talk to her pets about character and read out dialogue, secure that she will be appreciated.

Sadly I have no pets. If I were to have a pet, I would like...

...a dragon.

A big, fire-breathing dragon, male, of course. and very protective of me, his mistress. A dragon with golden jets of flame. A blue and green dragon, with black talons and very white teeth. A dragon who, when I patted his sun-warmed, living scales, would grumble softly in his long throat, like a soft landslide of stones. A dragon to fly with, to toast marshmallows with, to swim with in deep pools he could warm with his fire.

OK, so that's just me. Have you a pet? Or a fantasy pet?

A dragon! I love it.

I'm not a pet person, but I do like ducks. I stop at every body of water I pass to look for ducks. I go out of my way to look for ducks. I ask my husband if he's seen ducks. We bought corn and my husband brings some to work every day to feel the resident pair of mallards in the stream by his office building.

No live ducks at home, but duck figurines, duck lamps, duck shower curtains, duck lamp pulls, stuffed toy ducks, "Duck Crossing" signs, duck soap, duck paintings, duck photographs, a duck clock. If it has ducks on it, I probably have it. And also a few goose and swan things. And my husband keeps finding more stuff for me. **grins**

I love it, Lindsay.

Such mystical creatures, can you imagine what it would be like to have one follow you and protect you in this day. Goodness, new meaning for road rage if someone cut you off and he spit fire at them. Oh, gosh, can I borrow him? lol

Linda -- you put another aspect on Ducks Unlimited. Love it!

Do you have dishes, too?

My little town is along the Illinois river. We have an inlet that goes into a fishing club and we have ducks and geese who nest there. It's fabulous. We'd never get you out of there. [smile]

And Blue Heron's that I call modern day Pterodactyls.

Our home is done in ring-necked pheasants. My husband and two of our sons belong to Pheasants Forever.

I like ducks, too, Linda! I have a duck cushion. Your husband is lovely, finding you all those 'duck' things!

Bekki, it would be a new slant on 'burned rubber' with a dragon. (Grin)

Bekki, I have decorative duck plates, three or four sets, that my husband hung along the walls. I don't have duck plates you can eat off. Maybe I should get some.

As I think about it, I also have duck towels, duck bath mats, a duck chess set, duck sun catchers, 3 duck weather vanes, duck afghans, duck prints, duck stamps and rubber duckies.

Do I feel a blog post coming on?

I also have a pheasant throw that someone gave me as a gift. That would be right at home in your house.

I'd love your river. I've seen a few goose and swan nests, but a duck nest only once.

Lindsay, I have multiple duck pillows, too. Yes, my husband's very nice to get me all this duck stuff.

But, a dragon. Your very own marshmallow toaster. What a way to go. **grins**

Lindsay! How funny!

We have two dogs, a lab and a lab mix, and yes it's wonderful to have such unconditional love and acceptance. Pets don't care how you look or if you wear old sweats and slippers all day. Dogs are always ready to spend time with you without hesitation.

Dragons ... I think I don't have the energy for that!

Hi Loraine,
Your dogs sound super! Labs are usually such easy-going guys, too.

My draco is fantasy, which means he is amazingly well-behaved.

Oh, Lindsay, I've always wanted a pet dragon. Actually I have several WIPs with dragons, as pets ans shifters in some of them. There is nothing cuter, except my baby doggies, than those dragon baby figurines.

Ducks are great too. Long, long ago, my Mother managed a boarding kennel for a short time, and there was one person who boarded their duck, a very nice duck.

Currently, we have geese who hang out at our small pond.

Ducks and dragons... I think there's a story in there, Savanna!

Like the dragon idea...alot. We've got 2 dogs and they are snuggly little buggers. OUr bird, a cockateil named Spike, is a great low maintenance pet. If I could have any kind of animal..I would love a sealion. If I could have any fantasy pet...a Unicorn or a Pegasus. Very fun post....I really enjoyed it.
